Unity Software is undergoing a “reset,” Reuters reports. The company is laying off 265 employees as part of its termination of a professional services agreement with Weta, resulting in the elimination of 3.8 percent of its global workforce. This move comes after controversial decisions regarding runtime fees and pricing models faced backlash from developers, publishers and distributors, resulting in a series of layoffs and executive changes. The layoffs will affect employees in up to 14 office locations, with some offices closing entirely and others reducing their office footprint. Unity will also be reevaluating the technology it acquired from Weta in 2021. Unity’s CEO, John Riccitiello, stepped down in response to the company’s struggles, and was replaced by interim CEO James Whitehurst.
