Toyota is planning to expand its European range of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to six by 2026. The automaker presented two new concepts for its upcoming EV lineup, a “close-to-production” Urban SUV and a Sport Crossover, set for a 2025 European launch. Toyota, which is notably the world’s biggest automaker by sales, now only markets one fully electric model, the bZ4X, and aims for 100 percent carbon neutrality by 2035. The company’s two new concepts will join the bZ4X and a Compact SUV it showed last year. The Urban SUV concept is scheduled for a European debut in 2024. It is inspired by the company’s Yaris Cross and will be offered in front-wheel and all-wheel-drive options as well as two battery tiers — a budget and a longer-range one. The Sport Crossover concept has a sloping fastback profile, with Toyota positioning it as a sleeker alternative to traditional SUVs. It is expected to go into production in 2025. Additionally, Toyota is planning to introduce next-generation batteries starting in 2026 and beyond. The first battery will focus on performance, offering a conventional structure with double the range and a 20 percent cheaper price tag than the bZ4X. The second battery will be a “good quality, low-cost” one featuring a “new shape” with a bipolar structure, primarily using cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP). With this cell, Toyota aims for a 20 percent higher range and 40 percent lower cost than the bZ4X. A third battery will be purely high-performance, using high nickel cathode and bipolar technologies. The automaker aims for even lower costs and a further extended driving range with this battery. Additionally, Toyota showcased progress with its first solid-state batteries, which it hopes to commercialize in 2027-2027. With its solid-state cells, the automaker’s goal is a charging time of 10 to 80 percent in only 10 minutes.
