According to Reuters, Apple is trying to avoid potential antitrust charges from the European Union by offering its rivals access to its NFC technology for tap-and-go payments. The European Commission has been investigating Apple since 2020 over concerns that the company restricted access to key technology needed to develop rival mobile wallet solutions. While Apple’s proposal could help it avoid a fine and settle the case, it is not guaranteed to be accepted. The Commission will likely consult with Apple’s rivals and customers before making a decision. In addition to the EU investigation, Apple is also facing a lawsuit in the United States over anti-competitive behavior related to Apple Pay. A US District Court Judge ruled that the case would move forward, citing allegations that Apple charges inflated fees and engages in monopolization.
