Instagram introduces feature to restrict posts and Reels to Close Friends

The Close Friends feature on Instagram is being expanded to include Reels and feed posts, so users can share content with a smaller, more trusted audience. According to the Instagram team, Close Friends is a “pressure-free space to connect with the people that matter most,” and by extending the feature to Reels and feed posts, users will have “more ways to be your most authentic self on Instagram while having more choices over who sees your content.”

Sharing a Reel or feed post with Close Friends is simple – just hit the Audience button, select Close Friends, and then tap Share. The post or Reel will be labeled with a green star, indicating that it is only visible to those on your Close Friends list. The Close Friends list will remain the same across all Instagram features.

This expansion of the Close Friends feature is part of Instagram’s efforts to give users more control over who sees their content. Last month, Instagram head Adam Mosseri revealed that the team was experimenting with a way to let users share Stories with different subsets of followers, similar to the options available to Facebook users.
