Scientists at Northwestern University have developed miniature VR goggles for lab mice to study their brain activity. This system, called iMRSIV, fits over the mouse’s face and most of its body, providing a more immersive experience than previous flat display screens used. The goggles are positioned at the front of a treadmill to surround the mouse’s field of view as it runs in place, simulating overhead threats like birds swooping in for a meal. The researchers were able to record the mice’s physical responses and neural activity, allowing them to study both their behavior and brain function. This new technique was published in the journal Neuron on Friday.
