Upon its launch, Threads promised to support ActivityPub, the open-source protocol that powers Mastodon and other platforms. Meta’s commitment to this plan was unclear at the time. Now, Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Threads will be made compatible with the fediverse through a new test. This will make some Threads content available on Mastodon and other apps for the first time. The specifics of how this will work and the amount of content that will be available remain unclear. Meta previously introduced the ability to link Threads profiles on Mastodon, showing some insight into Threads users in the fediverse. This test signifies growing momentum behind ActivityPub, which advocates believe could revolutionize online interactions. Meta has also stated that ActivityPub support will allow users to transfer their content to another service. Despite skepticism from some fediverse enthusiasts, Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko has expressed support for Meta’s efforts. He sees large platforms adopting ActivityPub as validation of the move toward decentralized social media and a path for users to switch to better providers.
