Apple has initiated a new App Store feature called “contingent pricing” to offer discounts to customers who already have subscriptions to other services. This feature will be piloted with a select group of participants before being rolled out to more developers. The new feature will allow developers to give discounted subscription prices to customers who are already subscribed to a different service, whether from the same developer or a competitor. Apple has stated that these competitive discounts will be visible both on the App Store and in off-platform marketing channels. This move comes amidst ongoing scrutiny of Apple’s practices with the App Store and in-app purchases. In response to this, Apple is working on ways to improve its relationship with developers and will release more information on the new program next month.
