Android users historically have had trouble with iMessage. Globally, Apple’s proprietary chat platform is very popular, especially among teenagers. The chat bubbles that iMessage assigns to texts from Android phones can stigmatize users. Google tried to convince Apple to open its platform, but their efforts produced no results. Nothing recently revealed a messaging app called Chats. It supports RCS and iMessage. Chats can connect to Sunbird, a unified messaging platform. With over 100,000 people on the waiting list, Sunbird ensures users access to all their texts, including iMessage, from a single interface. Nothing Chats will ship with most of iMessage’s signature features, including typing indicators, high-resolution media sharing, and group messaging. However, read receipts and Tapback reactions will be added later. Nothing Chats will also support RCS, allowing android users to take advantage of similar iMessage features. CEO Carl Pei stated that Nothing Chats offers users the ability to communicate freely regardless of their smartphone brand. To access iMessage through Nothing Chats, users need to sign into their Apple ID. Nothing ensures that iMessage content sent through Chats is encrypted, and it will delete a user’s Apple ID credentials after two weeks of inactivity. Nothing Chats will be available to download from the Google Play Store starting on November 17. However, a Nothing Phone 2 is required to access the platform, with regional availability limited to the US, Canada, UK, EU, Norway, and Switzerland.
