Mark your calendars! Martin Scorsese’s latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, is set to premiere on Apple TV+ in a little over a week on January 12. The movie was initially released in theaters on November 20, and the 12-week gap before its streaming debut is now a common practice.
We already knew that Apple TV+ would be the exclusive home for the film, as the tech giant financed and facilitated its theatrical distribution. This marks the first time that an Apple-financed film has received a wide theatrical release.
Killers of the Flower Moon is a perfect fit for streaming due to its lengthy runtime of over three hours. The star-studded cast includes Lily Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Jesse Plemons and is set in 1920s Oklahoma, based on a true story about the serial murders of members of the Osage Nation tribe.
The film has been racking up award nominations, with 12 Critics Choice and 7 Golden Globe nominations, as well as making the American Film Institute’s list of Motion Pictures of the Year. Expect to see it in the running at the upcoming Oscars.
While Killers of the Flower Moon is the largest film from Apple Studios, it’s not their only notable release. Coda, another Apple original, even took home the Best Picture award at the 2021 Academy Awards. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and upcoming releases by directors Jon Watts and Matthew Vaughn are also on the horizon.
