Intellivision’s Amico retro gaming system is facing major delays due to a lack of funds for volume production. The company announced the Amico in 2018, with a projected release two years later and raised millions in refundable $100 deposits. However, the console has yet to materialize, and Intellivision has been struggling to secure the necessary funding.
In an attempt to raise funds, Intellivision recently released the Amico Home app for Android and iOS devices. The app allows users to experience the Amico gaming experience on their mobile devices, using two devices to simulate the gameplay and connect to a TV for a larger screen experience. Currently, the app only offers two original Intellivision games, Missile Command and Astrosmash, both from the 1980s, and charges $15 for each game.
While those who pre-ordered the console may receive download codes for certain games on Amico Home, it is unlikely that the app will generate enough revenue to fund the production of the Amico console. Despite the app’s limitations, Intellivision hopes that its release will attract investment for the console’s production.
In a statement, Intellivision expressed the need for additional investment to begin manufacturing the Amico consoles in volume. They hope that the release of Amico Home will put them in a better position to attract investment or fund manufacturing from the proceeds of game sales. The company remains dedicated to moving forward with the full vision of Amico, including the production of the consoles.
