Amazon’s Black Friday deals have slashed the Kobo Clara 2E e-reader to a new all-time low price. This model is Engadget’s top pick for 2023, offering great design, easy navigation and seamless library book borrowing. Normally $140, the Clara 2E is now just $120 on Amazon and Kobo.
Black Friday deals have knocked $20 off the sticker price of the excellent Kobo Clara 2E, now $120 at Amazon. After testing eight models from five brands, Engadget selected the Kobo Clara 2E as the top e-reader for most people. Pricier than the base Kindles, Engadget’s Amy Skorheim loved the Kobo’s intuitive design, IPX8 water resistance, warm light, and lack of ads.
The device features a 6-inch touchscreen with “ComfortLight Pro,” offering adjustable brightness and warmth. It has 16GB of storage, enough for around 12,000 e-books, and a battery life lasting for “weeks.” The setup process is user-friendly, walking you through account setup and asking about your favorite books to improve its algorithmic recommendations. It even encourages library lending through Overdrive integration, a rare instance of a company promoting free alternatives to its digital offerings. Most importantly, the Kobo Clara 2E provides a top-notch reading experience. It is light (only six ounces) with a textured back for comfortable reading sessions. The front light quality makes it the most paper-like of any e-reader, and adjusting brightness is as easy as swiping your finger down the screen’s left edge. It was also the most responsive to touch of any e-reader tested, with a quick wake-up feature that immediately jumps to the last reading page without swiping past ads or extra taps.
