E3, a long-running and influential video game expo, is officially coming to an end according to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). The ESA stated that the event ceased to garner enough interest necessary to continue. The association will now focus on promoting the industry behind the scenes. The pandemic was a significant factor in prompting the demise of E3, with the lack of in-person events since 2019 taking a toll. Major names pulling out also played a role in E3’s downfall as digital game sales and direct engagement with fans by publishers has lessened the need for E3. Although E3 is ending, other gaming events such as Gamescom and Summer Game Fest will continue to thrive. These virtual showcases will still provide a platform for game developers and publishers to promote their work directly to fans.
