Fact-Checking Content on the Unique Threads App Meta

Threads will moderate user-generated content and create a fact-checking program to match fact-check ratings from Facebook or Instagram. Fact-checkers cannot currently rate content on Threads, but ratings from Instagram or Facebook will roll over onto the app when something is flagged as false. The program is expected to be available early next year, and third-party fact-checking partners will review content on Threads. Users will have the option to adjust the level of “demotions on fact-checked content” in their personal feeds. Meta says these settings will roll over into Threads view if a user chooses to see less sensitive content on Instagram. Threads and other social media companies must expand guardrails to prevent misinformation ahead of the upcoming presidential elections. The fact-checking system on Threads follows recent moves by the company, like blocking certain words linked to misinformation. However, Threads has no plans to “amplify the news” on its platform, according to Adam Mosseri.
