We are 12 months on from OpenAI releasing the ChatGPT program, which has since become increasingly prevalent. Technological advancements, however, have outpaced our ability to control generative AI and address its various real-world consequences. With 2024 on the horizon, it’s crucial for generative AI and machine learning as a whole. Will AI continue to revolutionize human-computer communication, or is it another overhyped technology? OpenAI has significantly impacted consumer electronics in 2023. The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, has been in the spotlight, sparking significant publicity. Altman’s termination led to much upheaval and Microsoft’s intervention resulted in his reinstatement. OpenAI’s competition struggled to keep up, particularly Google, which failed to respond effectively with competing products. Google’s Gemini model beat out ChatGPT in standard benchmarks, but it used an unreleased model and only slightly surpassed GPT-4. Microsoft invested $10 billion in OpenAI in January, while Amazon placed a $4 billion bet on Anthropic’s Claude LLM. The employment landscape has changed, with AI technology threatening numerous industries and driving labor strikes. Data privacy and security issues have also arisen, with several incidents leading to major data leaks. The institutional response to these concerns has been weak.
