The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max can now capture spatial videos with the release of iOS 17.2, paving the way for the impending launch of the Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. The process is a bit more complex than traditional video recording, but we’ll guide you through it. Here’s how to capture spatial video with your iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.
1. Go to settings
Navigate to settings, then camera, and finally, formats. Look for “Spatial video for Apple Vision Pro” and turn it on to enable spatial video recording on your phone.
2. Open the camera app
With the setting enabled, open the camera app and select the video mode. Remember that spatial videos must be recorded in landscape orientation.
3. Record a spatial video
The screen will display a spatial video icon. Tap it, then press record or either volume button to start recording. To capture high-quality spatial videos, maintain a steady and level phone, frame subjects three to eight feet away, and ensure even and bright lighting.
4. Watch your video
For now, you can watch your spatial videos on your iPhone or other traditional screens. These videos are recorded at 1080p at 30FPS, but will be viewable in 3D on the Apple Vision Pro headset once it’s released.
The release date of the Apple Vision Pro headset is in the first half of 2024, so while you wait, start building your library of spatial video clips.
What is spatial video?
Similar to spatial audio, which immerses users in 360-degree virtual space for sound effects and music, spatial video provides visual immersion that can be experienced in all directions.
Remember that while you can capture spatial videos with an iPhone 15 Pro, you’ll need the Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset to fully enjoy them. This technology isn’t exclusive to Apple, but the specific integration of spatial video is unique to Apple’s ecosystem.
