Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen used Google Bard to reference fake cases in federal court, as reported by The New York Times. Cohen admitted to passing on documents with bogus cases to his lawyer, who then presented them to a federal judge. In court papers, Cohen claimed he didn’t keep up with legal technology trends. His legal team filed a motion to end court supervision from his 2018 campaign finance case. However, the judge had trouble finding the cited cases and requested an explanation from Cohen’s attorney. Cohen blamed the AI bot for generating citations that looked real but were fake, and accused his lawyer of including them without verification. This mistake could impact Cohen’s role as a witness in a criminal case against Trump. Another lawyer was accused of using an AI program to produce closing arguments in a separate case.
