In 2022, Polyend introduced the Play, a sample-based groovebox and MIDI sequencer that was widely adored. However, due to the pandemic-induced chip shortage, it was initially difficult to obtain. But in just over 18 months, the company has managed to reduce the cost of the Play from $799 to $499. The updated version, Play+, is now available and is significantly more powerful. It boasts eight tracks of sample playback and eight tracks of polyphonic MIDI sequencing, as well as stereo sample playback, four built-in synth engines, and support for audio over USB-C. Moreover, it offers 14 individual stereo tracks for each of the eight sample channels, the three synth slots, the reverb and delay sends, and a master audio out.
The synth engines are collectively limited to eight voices, but can be divided among three tracks as desired. The four different engines—ACD, FAT, VAP, and WTFM—offer a range of virtual analog and FM synthesis capabilities. The Play+ also features presets with macro controls for quick adjustments, as well as semi-generative pattern filling options.
One interesting feature is the option for owners of the original Play to trade in their units for the Play+ for $399, providing an upgrade path to the more powerful hardware and reducing potential waste.
The Polyend Play+ is now available for $799.
