Proton Mail and Proton Calendar Desktop Apps Finally Available
Proton, a Swiss company known for its privacy-focused alternatives to Google Workspace apps, has launched a Windows and macOS Proton Mail and Proton Calendar application. The desktop app is currently in beta for subscribers on the most expensive premium tier, but it will be available for all Proton users in early 2024.
The new desktop app offers a modern design and a clutter-free experience, providing certain advantages over using email on a browser. According to Proton CEO Andy Yen, Gmail does not offer a desktop app. The addition of the desktop app now gives Proton apps on all major platforms.
In addition to the desktop app, Proton made several new features available to all platforms, including auto-forwarding email rules and integration with customer relationship management (CRM) and customer support software. Proton CEO Bart Butler mentions that encrypting forwarded messages while maintaining the company’s security was a big challenge.
Attachment previews are also available for all Proton Mail platforms, allowing users to view email attachments directly from the inbox with one click without compromising security.
The new features come after the company had a busy year, launching a native Windows file-syncing app in July and a password manager in April.
While the Proton Mail desktop app is available in beta for Proton Visionary subscribers, auto-forwarding is available for paid users on any plan. Attachment previews, snoozing, and calendar improvements are available to all Proton account users.
