Meta’s Threads has finally arrived in Europe over five months after launching in the US, UK and around the world. The app is now officially available in Europe on the web, but the iOS and Android apps are still unavailable for many. Users can also access the platform without creating a profile, in compliance with EU policies. The delay in the app’s availability was reportedly due to the upcoming EU Digital Markets Act. Threads began with basic features and required users to sign in using their Instagram accounts. Since then, it has added a web version, “following” and “for you” feeds, and more features, making it a robust rival to other short-form social media apps. Additionally, Meta has started testing the ability to make Threads posts available on Mastodon and other fediverse apps, fulfilling a key promise made when it introduced Threads. Threads has been successful in terms of user signups, but engagement has been an issue. With its launch in Europe, however, it has the potential to grow, and Meta has the resources to make it a success.
